This course is aimed at equipping students with basic translating skills and strategies of translation. Students will be trained to apply these skills by reading different types of text closely. Translation exercises are given bilingually to enhance students’ language ability, broaden cross-cultural knowledge, and make their preparation for the industry.

The focus of language learning is close reading with different types of English text, including news articles, transcripts of TED talks, film subtitles, songs, and English novels. QA discussions and regular quizzes and are required. The emphasis of increasing cross-cultural knowledge is introducing basic translating skills and strategies of translation. Students are supposed to know differences between Chinese and English language and culture by discussing the examples that the instructor provides in the class. Through various exercises, students get to know the process of translation, how to communicate with clients, and the responsible attitude about working as a translator. Corresponding CEFR Can-do statements This course is an introduction of English-Chinese translation. It requires an intermediate level of English (CEFR B2). a. Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interest with a satisfactory level of comprehension. b. Can read linguistically complex texts such as specialized articles and literary works. c. Can paraphrase short written passages in a simple fashion, using the original text wording and ordering. d. Can express news and views effectively in writing, and relate to those of others. e. HERE IS WHAT I EXPECT FROM YOU: 1) Class attendance, lesson preparation and active class participation are required. If you are absent for more than 6 hours with no valid excuses, you will fail this course. 2) Absence from a class is NO excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in that class. It is YOUR responsibility to ask your fellow classmates what has been covered and what will be doing in the class. 3) Make every effort. Always ask yourself: What will I do to promote my learning? 4) Plagiarism and cheating on the exam is absolutely not accepted. If someone is found plagiarizing or cheating on an exam, it means he/she will get a zero point for that exam. If you have any questions regarding the expectations for a specific assignment or exam, please do not hesitate to ask. 5) Honesty.
