This course is designed for learners of upper-intermediate English proficiency who have no many writing experiences in the real world, aiming to develop effective written communication skills in the pursuit of their professional career goals. Several job-related genres will be introduced, including employment documents, result-oriented email messages, short reports, proposals and recommendations. In order to discover the structures and language forms of the introduced genres, learners will accomplish various tasks individually and collaboratively by reviewing and analyzing authentic texts of the genres, completing hands-on writing tasks, and making presentations for text-analysis findings.

Several job-related genres will be introduced, including employment documents, result-oriented email messages, short reports, memos, updates, proposals and recommendations. In order to discover the structures and language forms of the introduced genres, learners will accomplish various tasks individually and collaboratively by reviewing and analyzing authentic texts of the genres, completing hands- on writing tasks, and making presentations for text-analysis findings. Achieving an effective learning outcome, learners have to actively participate in discussions, expressing ideas, and exchanging information. By the end of the course students are expected to: (1) critically examine and analyze the structural features of authentic texts of specific genres for occupational purposes, (2) write conventionalized, structured job-related genres with focus and relevant support, (3) communicate and exchange information showing complex relationships, and rectify their writing in meaning and form. 本課程以職場慣用英文句型教授電子郵件和信函撰寫,可實際應用至校園生活和職場溝通需求,非以國際貿易為目 的,亦不需商學背景。 Prerequisites Students who wish to take this course should: 1. complete the training of Upper-intermediate English III – Reading and Listening, or Upper-intermediate English I and II 2. be able to write a paragraph of at least 150 words about experiences or events, describing personal feelings and reactions. 3. need to know and properly use most of these language areas: comparatives and superlatives; conditionals 2nd and 3rd; modals; future continuous; past continuous; past perfect; past tense responses; present perfect continuous; reported speech; simple passive; connecting words expressing cause and effect, comparison and contrast; relative clauses, etc. Core Capabilities (英文核心能力指標) 英語溝通與表達能力 35% 深度分析與組織思考能力 25% 英語學習策略與技巧 15% 對英語與多元文化的國際視野 10% 善用英語學習資源,培養獨立學習英語的習慣能力 15% Course Materials Online course package will be provided. (*The teacher reserves the right to make changes for pending tasks.) Course Requirements and Evaluation 1. Attendance & oral participation 10% (*No free points for oral participation!) 2. Employment writing 25% (*multiple drafts of resume and cover letter) 3. Email message writing 10% (*take home exercises, and 1-2 individual email messages) 4. Mid-term exam 20% 5. Presentation 10% 6. Final writing 15% 7. Learning tasks 10% Course Rules 1. Every week this class requires students to preview the lessons and write exercises. Come prepared for the pre-study sessions, and complete the writing exercises before the class. 2. Students should always bring pens, pencils, paper notebooks or loose-leaf paper to keep notes or learning records. To achieve better learning results, students are encouraged to bring laptops and tablets to access to online teaching materials in the classroom, or print them out and bring to the classroom, rather than using cell phones. 3. Oral participation is required in all English classes. Writing courses need students’ active thinking and participation, too. Silent and inactive sit-ins, sleeping, or using cell phones in class will cause your participation credits (10%) not to be granted. 4. Regular attendance is important due to various learning tasks that requires students’ participation. Absence may suffer the result of in-class activities (15%) when you do not ask to make up for them. Absence may be authorized under exceptional circumstances, if a proof of justifiable reason can be provided. 5. Writing assignment must be submitted on time. Every writing assignment loses 10% per day when the assignment is late (including weekend). Presentations should be made according to the date you sign up, and you cannot make up the presentation if you miss it. If you have any problem with the presentation date, please come to fix the date beforehand. Absence cannot be an excuse of not knowing assignment submission or deadline. Be a responsible adult learner! 6. ***AI-assisted reports and assignments allowed in limited instances:*** AI can be used to prepare for reports and assignments by brainstorming, but students must show how it helped them reach the result.
