This is a one-semester, two-credit, required course for English language proficiency high intermediate (B2 and UP) level learners. The aim is to cultivate learner’s English communication skills with focus on advancing learners’ listening, speaking, and writing proficiencies. Theme- ba<x>sed texts guide learners to activate their existed language learning skills to explore advanced contexts. This course specifically targets on encouraging learners to practice critical thinking approaches while exploring various thematic topics. The 21st century themes and skills such as global awareness, communication, comprehension, and critical thinking are the three key foundations in this class design. This course acknowledges individual excellence as well as community approach learning. Performances are assessed ba<x>sed on learner’s individual, pair-up, and/or team achievements.

The aim of this class is designed to cultivate learner’s English communication skills with focus on advancing learners’ listening, speaking, and writing proficiencies. The detail practices in this syllabus are subject to change base on learner’s learning characteristics. Students will have opportunity to 1. review and practice grammatical structures (see textbook chapters for info) to express and discuss the significances 2. build up theme-based vocabulary and academic phrases through assigned reading, and conduct, engage in conversations, theme discussions, and more 3. familiarize with language skills such as outlining, summarizing, critical thinking while exploring various language learning tasks (e.g., listening, speaking, & writing) 4. organize information collected, establish perspectives, and deliver problem- solving know-hows in speaking and writing activities Corresponding CEFR Can-do statements 1.[LISTENING] can catch much of what is said around the topic, understand a discussion between speakers who do not modify their language in any way. 2.[READING] can analyze articles, reports and reviews in which the writers express specific points of view. 3.[SPEAKING INTERACTION] can participate in conversation, express clearly points of view, ideas or feelings naturally with natural speech turn-taking. 4.[SPEAKING PRODUCTION] can present a topical issue in a critical manner and weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of various options. 5.[WRITTEN PRODUCTION] can write long clear topical statements, though complex concepts may be oversimplified, and can correct many of my mistakes in the process. 6.[STRATEGIES] can generally correct slips and errors if I become aware of them or if they have led to misunderstandings. 7.[QUALITY OF LANGUAGE] can link my thoughts and write into simple, well-organized text. (1 point cut each) *Students should provide valid absence proof (e.g. illness, emergency, important occasions, etc.) within 14 days after your absence record is marked. *When your absent hours exceed the school’s limit, the school record system will remove you from class. 2.You are required to submit your assignments on time. See detail arrangement on our eLearn system page for information. All your assignment should be submitted/kept on the school eLearn space. Grading policies are announced for each assignment. 3.Plagiarism or/and cheating on the exam and assignment receive no grade. Permission for redoing the assignment or retaking the exam receive 25% grade cut. 4.Group presentation should be completed by all group members. You will receive no grade if you do not take part in your team’s presentation. 5.Your personal digital devices should be used to support your learning tasks. Feel free to bring them to class. However, digital and classroom etiquettes should be closely observed. 6.Smart phones should be muted in class. Emergency calls should be done outside of the room. 7.This is a gender-equal class. The classroom is a safe place for learning, Misconducts such as harassment, bully, or any physical assault will be reported to the campus safety system. 8.If you are absent for more than 12 hours, your course withdrawal will NOT be approved. 9.Plagiarism on assignments and/or on exam is absolutely unacceptable. If found plagiarizing or cheating, he/she will not have grade result for that assignment or exam. AI software applications such as ChatGPT, and others, must only be used with your classroom teacher's approval and/or permission. 4. You must follow your teacher's instruction on when or how to use AI software, ex. the use of ChatGPT, for producing your homework, assignment, test, exam, projects, or reports. 5. Your class teacher reseves all the rights to assume that any of your class work may have been organized and/or produced with reference, or use of any AI devices.
