This course examines the development of the People’s Republic of China, focusing on economic growth since its reform and opening in 1978. The course compares China’s development with other countries such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Topics include China’s five-year plans, its modernisation drive and entry into the World Trade Organisation. The course discusses China’s global development, including its aid policy, its engagement with multilateral development institutions, and its Belt and Road Initiative. We will explore the theoretical underpinnings of China’s model of development. What is the relationship between state and market in China and in other countries?
