This course design is divided in two. The first half introduces students with phonological topics on feature geometry, underspecification, tone and intonation, prosodic morphology, and productivity, diachrony and synchrony, abstractness. The second half focuses on Optimality Theory and some of its subsequent developments. The aim is tripartite. It shows various speech patterns of the world’s languages. It presents how phonological theories explain the speech patterns. And it equips students with basic abilities to analyze linguistic data and to develop an argument through review exercises.
