Qualitative Inquiry (QI) is a course designed to provide an overview of the nature, characteristics, philosophical assumptions, goals, content, procedures, and approaches of qualitative research. This course will review the steps in conducting qualitative research, including identification of the phenomenon to be studied, identification of the participants and fields in the study, generation of hypotheses, data collection, data analysis, desc<x>riptions/interpretations and conclusions.

This course will review the steps in conducting qualitative research, including identification of the phenomenon to be studied, identification of the participants and fields in the study, generation of hypotheses, data collection, data analysis, descriptions/interpretations and conclusions. Major approaches (narrative research, grounded theory, action research, phenomenology research, ethnography research, case study) of qualitative research will be introduced. Course objectives: This is an introductory course and so will cover a broad range of material. With this in mind, the objectives are to provide students with: 1. Understanding the nature and definition of QI. 2. Understanding the common characteristics in various types of QI. 3. Understanding the philosophical assumptions underlying QI. 3. Understanding the goal, content, traits, styles, and procedures of six QI approaches. 4. Understanding the strengths and limitations of six QI approaches. 5. Completing a proposal by using one approach of QI. The second half of the class will be practice- and activity- oriented. In summary, the course will combine the use of lectures, discussion, and experiential activities. Course Requirements: 1. Actively participate in class discussion, activities, and demonstrations. 2. Read the selected assignments in their entirety, coming to class prepared to discuss the readings as outlined on the schedule. 3. Complete a review paper (at least reviewing one article, no more than 3 pages), a project (proposal), an individual presentation, a leading discussion, and an interview/a reflection journal. 4. You can select one approach of QI for the project (proposal). 5. You can practice an interview (at least 20 mins) to collect data and write a reflection journal (no more than 2 pages). *Your review paper, reflection journal, and project should be submitted to elearn on time and be formatted in 12 font, double-space, and one-inch margin. 6. Your project (no more than 15 pages) should employ one approach of QI. Criteria of grading include that (1) significance of the topic, (2) matching between the study purpose and the nature of QI approach, (3) quality of literature review, (4) details and accuracy of the method, and (5) quality of writing. 6. No mobile phones in classes. No AI assistance in terms of papers and other requirements.
