This course aims to provide students with some basic and some not-so-basic facts about languages of the world. We will be looking at the diversity of languages across space (and time), their fundamental similarities, and other puzzles. By the end of the class, students are expected to know not only the membership and geographical distribution of each language family covered in this course, but also some salient linguistic features of each language family.
