In this course, we will study major plays of Shakespeare that cover the dramatic genres of the English Renaissance. We will begin our course with the study of romance in the Tempest, move on to a further probing of love, family, identity, and power in a problem play, Merchant of Venice, and then to As You Like It, a major comedy. The latter half of the course will be devoted to the tragedies and histories that explore issues of politics and tyranny. Besides the four tragedies of Julius Caesar, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, we will discuss Shakespeare’s interpretation and popularization of the turbulent period of English history before the Tudor monarchs of his time in Richard II, 1 Henry IV, and Henry V. The approach we take to the study of Shakespeare in this course emphasizes literary form and historical contexts.
