Brief

This course is a study of English writing from the 7th century to the year 1700, covering a long historical period spanning broadly a thousand years, from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, through the Restoration and beyond. While such a survey course may not provide a comprehensive coverage of English literature before the eighteenth century, it introduces students to major writers during this period. In addition, we will investigate and conceptualize English literary history as well as the development of English identity and community before 1700. As we study the way English literature developed historically in this course, we will study the way English writers conceptualized who they were as individuals and as a community. We will pay close attention to the linguistic, cultural, and political contexts for English writing and study and analyze the development of literary traditions and genres, the vernacular, and the evolving construction of self and authorship.
