Brief

In this course, students will learn general concepts about scientific publication, explore resources for literature search, develop skills to read and comprehend scientific papers with critical thinking, and cultivate presentation skills. This course contains lectures and students’ oral presentations. Feedback and evaluation will be provided by the Instructor and fellow students.

Course keywords: Seminar, Journal club, Medical science, Presentation, Scientific publication, Literature search, Transportable skill Course Requirement: 1.The presentation order will be decided in the first class. 2.Each student will select and present a peer-reviewed research paper (i.e., no Reviews/Perspectives), published in the last 4 years (2017~2021) by any of the corresponding authors below: David E. Clapham; Karl Deisseroth; Catherine Dulac; Ehud Isacoff; Akiko Iwasaki; Lily Y. Jan; Thomas J. Jentsch; David Julius; Zachary A. Knight; Ardem Patapoutian; Kodi Ravichandran; David M. Sabatini; Bernardo Sabatini; Li-Huei Tsai. Or, a peer-reviewed research paper, published within 2 years (2019-2021), depicting roles of ion channels in non-excitable cells (i.e.g, not neurons nor muscle cells) on journals with Impact Factor >10 (https://jcr.clarivate.com/). Grading Criteria (pending to change): 1. Oral presentation (45%): o Submit the paper of choice on time (5%) o Post your paper of choice on time (5%) o Submit the presentation slides on time (5%) o Averaged score from the Presentation Evaluation Form (30%) 2. Participation (40%): o Submit 2 questions to iLMS (22%) o participate in Q&A (18%) 3. Attendance (15%): no skipping class more than 2 times without prior notice or acceptable reasons. Student coming in 10 minutes after class start is considered as skipping class. 4. Presentation in English: for those who choose to present the paper in English, additional 5 bonus points will be added to the final score.
