Or copy this url directly: https://newsletter.cc.nthu.edu.tw/nthu-list/index.php/zh/home-zh-tw/listid-67- 二、指定用書 (Text Books) No. 三、參考書籍 (References) No. 四、教學方式 (Teaching Method) Course format: In addition to 1) attending invited talks, students who take the course for credit are required to 2) write talk “previews” before coming to talks, 3) complete the research projects they started last semester, and 4) participate in actual research studies on Sona as participants. I explain these one by one below. -- There’ll be 7 invited talks this semester. I’ll take attendance. You need to participate in at least 6 invited talks “plus the presentation day,” in order to pass the course. So mark your calendar now. If you face any difficulty anytime as we go in fulfilling this requirement, feel free to let me know and we’ll sort it out case by case. -- You’re required to send in a “talk preview” no later than 72 hours before an invited talk (i.e., on Saturdays), and you need to collect at least 6 previews over the semester. That is, you can only miss one out of the 7 talks scheduled. In a talk preview, you’ll answer three questions: 1) If you’re to pick two keywords for (some of) the representative work of the upcoming speaker, what’d the words be? Do a little research on the speaker and write down the keywords. 2) What do the keywords you choose mean? Do a little research and explain them in a few sentences. 3) Why’d you wanna know more about the speaker’s work (yes, you do)? Write down 2 reasons in a sensible manner. -- Continuing what you started last semester, you’ll finish your group research projects and present them in a class toward the end of semester. All members of the same groups will get the same baseline scores. I’ll then adjust them based on your peer reviews. See grading scheme below for more info. -- To expose you to research, the course requires you to take part in real research studies as participants and collect 3 participation credits over the semester. See grading scheme below for more info. Course website: The course website is located on eLearn. Announcements and course materials will be posted there. You will also find supplementary reading, if any, on eLearn. Attendance: I’ll take attendance. You’ll sign the attendance sheet as last semester. Communication: Everyone is welcome to send me messages “on eLearn,” to request an appointment, ask questions, share your thoughts and concerns about the course. I will try my best to respond to you within two business days. Office hours: Class time on “proj. days” -- I encourage you to take advantage of office hours at least once during this semester. Office hours are a great opportunity to clarify course material and ask questions regarding assignments. -- You’re welcome to just walk in during the designated time. I however would ask you for a favor: Whenever possible, message me before you come, telling me what I can do for you, what questions/suggestions you have etc. Just so I can be better prepared and make our meetings as efficient and meaningful as possible. Also, that prevents you from bumping into others, for their, your own privacy. Expectations: -- Please be respectful of your fellow students and silence your phone. -- Please be responsible for your learning by budgeting your time, being on time and prepared, and seeking assistance when needed. -- You are responsible for all information presented in class, even if you have an excused absence for a particular day. Talk previews: To pass the course, you’ll need to send in at least 6 non-effectively-blank talk previews “in time” over the semester. The previews will be graded using the following scale: 0, effectively no submission; 1, fair; 2 insightful. See the grading scheme below for more info. I accept late submissions, with a penalty. Late submissions may still give you some points, less effectively, but they may be the points you need. Let me know if you plan to do a makeup preview. Late submissions won’t be counted without my permission. Group research project: The project grade will include 3 parts: an in-class presentation, a final written report, and peer reviews. The first two will be the same for everyone in the same group. The peer review will be an “optional,” opened-ended survey in which you can inform me about any of your teammates’ investments in your shared project. I may adjust people’s project grades based on the reviews they’ve got. -- Toward the end of the semester, you’ll give a 20-min presentation on your work followed by a 10-min Q&A, like in a real conference. You can, as many will, use slides, but this is not required. Most importantly, take the chance to get feedback from your peers to really polish your final product. I’ll prepare snacks and drinks. I mean, it’s a mini-conference. -- Finally, the written research report, due in a week after the presentation. The work should be an empirical paper, in the format of a common empirical paper, including all common sections you see in a published psychological research article. Your paper should be at least 2500 words long (excluding bibliography), and formatted. You’re welcome to follow the APA style; that’s the go-to, but not required. The goal of formatting is merely to help you organize information and to help readers (i.e., me) see the organization. I won’t check your format like a bored librarian. -- With the written report, “everyone” can submit a peer review, in which you can comment on your teammates’ contributions. I may adjust people’s grades accordingly if needed. Research participation: To expose you to research, the course requires you to take part in real research studies as participants and collect 3 participation credits on Sona over the semester, so you can actually feel what psyc research is like. -- Sona is the online system in which you will find and sign up for studies, and then track your participation records. It’s here: https://nthu.sona-systems.com/ -- 1 credit on Sona usually means 1-hour participation, but the rate sometimes varies depending on other factors, e.g., task difficulty. -- As encouragement, completing the abount-15-minute prescreening survey by March will give you 1 (hour-worth) credit. Doing it later gives you 0.3 credit (i.e., about 18-min effort). -- In case you can’t or don’t want to participate in enough studies for 3 research participation credits, there are more than 6 sets of learning materials and quizzes on eLearn for existing studies in the literature. Reading/watching/listening to a set of materials and scoring 75 or higher out of 100 on the corresponding quiz will give you 0.5 research participation credit, so if necessary, you can complete the whole participation assignment this way.
