The civilization of electricity is going through a paradigm shift at this moment. The semiconductor pioneered by John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain in the 1950s leads to the revolution of information technology, and the way we share and exchange information is forever changed. In the next decades, this paradigm shift will revolutionize the way we share and exchange energy. Power electronics technologies will shape the internet of electric power as more and more renewables and distributed energy resources are developed to reduce CO2 and prevent global warming. This course focuses on the fundamentals of DC/AC power converters the technologies of their applications in the smart grid.

Square-Wave inverters: Phase-shifted control; Six-Step inverter. 2. Fourier series analyses of specical symmetric waveforms. 3. Phasor analysis approach. 4. Pulse-Width Modulation inverters: Sine-Triangle PWM; Stationary frame transformation and synchronous frame transformation; Space-Vector PWM; Zero sequence injection. 5. Current Regulator: Hysteresis regulator; Synchronous frame PI regulator; Predictive regulator. 6. Multilevel inverters: Neutral point clamped (NPC); Flying Capacitor; Cascaded H Bridge; SVPWM of multilevel inverter. 7. Random switching technoques. 8. Application Examples: PMSM drives; Field Oriented Control of induction machines; Active Filter Systems; Static VAR Compensators; Electric vehicles, Microgrids; Energy storage systems. 9. IGBT implementation issues: Gate Driver and protection; Low stray inductance bus plane; Parallel connection of IGBTs. 10.
