This course covers the application of synthetic and natural macromolecules as biomaterial. Topics include molecular structure, polymer synthesis reactions, proteins, DNA and enzymes as functional materials, molecular surface engineering, multifunctional organic materials, including polymeric nanoreactors, conducting polymers and virus-mediated biomineralization. Many novel biotechnology that utilizes polymeric materials are also surveyed. Students are expected to develop basic understanding of the role macromolecules as biomaterials.
