This course aims to help students identify, discuss and understand important topics of e-learning from the perspective of learning technologies and, moreover, explore potential aspects of information communication technologies that are of great relevance nowadays as well as in the future. This course provides the historical background and rationale of e-learning. It also provides design of information learning management systems and other technological artifacts for supporting self-study and collaboration in learning and social contexts, and to theoretical perspectives and empirical studies that inform such design. Topics will cover learning theories, message design, interface design, interactivities and Web-enhanced learning, digital content production, online learning community, MOOCs, SPOCs, flipped classroom, etc.

This course provides the historical background and rationale of e-learning. It also provides design of information learning management systems and other technological artifacts for supporting self-study and collaboration in learning and social contexts, and to theoretical perspectives and empirical studies that inform such design. Topics will cover learning theories, instructional message design, interface design, interactivities and Web-enhanced learning, digital content production, online learning community, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Small Private Online Courses (SPOC), flipped classroom, integration of portable/handheld devices in mobile learning, game-based learning, distance education in formal and informal settings such as in school or in corporate. In addition, factors influencing the effectiveness of uses of e-learning such as changing roles of teachers and learner differences, etc. will be discussed. Learners are strongly encouraged to explore the potential of information communication technology in e-learning that can be customized to their interests or be associated with their specific academic backgrounds. It is expected that the learners could benefit when they might become a productive role to contribute to this area. After taking this course, students will be able to: 1. Understand the definition and development of e-learning; 2. Realize learning theories related to e-learning, interface and message design and interaction; 3. Know about the digital content design production and evaluation using instructional models such as ASSURE model; 4. Have hands-on experiences of designing and producing e-learning materials (or learning platforms); 5. Learn about research issues in e-learning such as mobile learning, learning community, game-based learning, MOOCs, tangible technologies, etc.; 6. Understand e-learning adopted in corporate training, current status and challenges; 7. Know about uses of open source software for e-learning and open social software such as web logs, online forums, second life and wiki modules, and so forth to be incorporated into authentic educational context to foster web-based teaching and learning; 8. Discuss the changing roles of learners and instructor in e-learning contexts; 9.
