Applied Mathematics is a two-semester course, emphasizing the basic mathematical training encountered in science and engineering. Facing the modern frontiers with brand-new challenges, the course contains the following key modules: Applied Math I (1) complex algebra (chap 3,4) (2) partial differentiation (chap 5) (3) linear algebra (chap 7,8) (4) vector calculus (chap 10,11) (5) ordinary differential equations (chap14,15) Applied Math II (1) integral transforms (chap 12,13) (2) special functions (chap 16,17,18) (3) partial differential equations (chap 20,21) (4) calculus of variations (chap 22) (5) complex analysis (chap 24,25)

While numerical methods are not listed explicitly, it will be integrated into other modules to facilitate complementary usage of analytic and numeric techniques. Textbook: Mathematical Methods for physics and engineering (3rd edition) by Riley, Hobson and Bence Classes: 08:30 – 09:50 on Mondays and Thursdays (Physics Building R124) Grades April 10 (Mon) midterm (30%) June 12 (Mon) final (30%) 8 scheduled quizzes (40%) Detail information can be found in the e-Learn platform (https://elearn.nthu.edu.tw). The letter grades of the course are based on the average scores of quizzes, midterms and final, weighted by the overall class performance.
