This course aims to advance the students’ ability to understand and present current literatures of their topic of interest by preparing an oral presentation, sharing what they learned in the paper to classmates with a different expertise, and lead a discussion.

Throughout the semester, each student will choose a paper to read thoroughly and prepare a 40-min presentation based on the paper. The presentation should include proper introduction for scientists from a different field, results from the paper, and conclusion and discussion. The presenting student will also lead a discussion at the end and answer questions from the instructor and classmates. In addition to the paper being presented, the presenting students should read additional references to fully understand the background of the research, its significance, and the technologies used in it. The presenting student is also encouraged to have his/her own interpretations and opinions on the paper being presented. The paper being presented should be a research article published after peer-review in a reputable journal. The topic should be relevant to life sciences and biology. The presenting student is expected to get the instructor’s approval of the paper at least two weeks before the presentation. The paper being presented should be sent to the classmates one week before the presentation. Teaching Method. The instructor will be available for discussion one week before presentation. During the presentation, the instructor will ask questions and participate in discussions. After each presentation, the instructor will summarize the presenter’s performance briefly. Schedule. Week 1: Introduction and sign-up Week 2 and 3: Reminders of presentation skills Week 4 – 18: Student Presentation Evaluation. Attendance: 20%. 3 points will be deduced for being late to class. 10 points will be deduced for absence without prior notification (with valid reasons). Presentation: 60%. The instructor will evaluate the presenting student’s performance based on his/her knowledge on the topic and paper (35%), presentation by powerpoint (10%), time control (5%), and how he/she answers questions (10%). Participation: 20%. Student who participates in discussion will get 2 points per class.
