This course is a continuation of Introduction to Formal Semantics . The discussion start reviews the semantic composition system á la Heim and Kratzer (1998) Semantics in Generative Grammar and then addresses the issue how this system should be enriched so that it can fully capture the meaning of natural language Several topics will be chosen, including but not limited to: modality, attitudes, degree semantics. The discussion on these topics will illustrate how an enriched system suggested in this course accounts for various puzzling linguistic phenomenon.
