This course aims to introduce the interaction of language and culture from a multifaceted perspective. In addition to language structure and language use, emphasis will be put on how culture shapes language and vice versa. The cultural backgrounds of language users are reflected in the writing systems, as well as loanwords. Linguistic relativism will be discussed too. Students are expected to appreciate the complexity of language and culture with respect to some hotly-debated topics.
