CHEM化 121 W3W4F2
Organic Synthesis (II) is centered on advanced organic chemistry, especially in the fields of pericyclic reactions, carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, and organome<x>tallic compounds. The final and the major part of this course will focus on the application of Organic Synthesis (I) and (II) toward complex multistep synthesis.
Course keywords: Organic Reactions; Pericyclic Reactions; Organome<x>tallic Compounds; Organic Synthesis Textbook: Advanced Organic Chemistry Part B, fifth Edition, by Carey and Sunderg Reference book: Organic Synthesis, 2nd Ed.; by Michael B. Smith Teaching Method: The course will be delivered in English. 1. Carbon-Carbon Bond-Forming Reactions of Compounds of Boron, Silicon, and Tin (Chapter 9) 2. Organometallic Compounds (Chapters 7 and 8) 3. Pericyclic Reactions-electrocyclizations (continuation from organic synthesis I) 4. Aromatic Substitution Reactions (Chapter 8 and 11) 5. Reactions Invovling Carbocations, Carbenes, and Radicals as Reactive Intermediates (Chapter 10) 6. Multistep Syntheses (Chapter 13) Two three-hour exams for mid-term (time TBA). final exam will be a team challenge! each designated team will proposed a retro as well as a forward synthetic route for a natural product and eventually present in front of the whole class. Evaluation: 30% for each mid-term exams and 40% for the final exam; extra 10% bonus for in class attendance.
